~Chapter Fourteen

Tamara didn’t understand why she was crying, but sadness had somehow crept up on her during her conversation with Carter. She’d rushed to get off the phone because she hadn’t wanted to start sobbing while still talking to him. The last thing she needed was for Carter to tell Jonathan that she’d blubbered over the phone when she’d learned that he was out on a date. She shouldn’t be crying, anyway; she ought to be happy that Jonathan had finally found someone to share his life with. Wasn’t that what she’d always wanted for him?

But Jonathan was a scoundrel and a liar. She wasn’t about to be happy for him and some other woman. After giving a good kick to the box containing the album of photos from college, she picked up her cell phone and was about to hurl it across the room when she heard the doorbell ring. Her heart was still brimming with anger as she stormed over to the door and opened it. Before Leah and Larissa had taken even a step inside, she blasted them with a furious question: “Why did he kiss me if he already had a girlfriend?”

“Whoa, wait a minute,” Leah said as she set her bags on the floor. “Who are you talking about?”

“Why don’t you sit down, Tamara?” Larissa suggested as she entered the apartment. “You look like you’re about to blow.” She took Tamara by the arm and led her down the hall toward the sofa.

“Men are such cheaters...dogs,” Tamara declared.

“What happened? Will you please tell us what’s going on?” Leah bent down in front of her sister, tissue in hand, and wiped the tears from Tamara’s face. “And stop crying, okay? I don’t like to see you hurting. It makes me want to cry, too.”

Taking the tissue from her sister, Tamara blotted her eyes. “I thought he was different...a real prince of a guy. My prince. Especially after he fed me that whole ‘born again’ line. But Jonathan is just like everyone else.”

Larissa and Leah exchanged glances. They sat down on either side of Tamara. Then Larissa said, “I thought you and Jonathan were just friends.”

“We are just friends.” Getting frustrated, Tamara said, “At least, I thought we were friends.”

“Then why are you so upset over the fact that he apparently has a girlfriend?” Leah asked.

“He...” Taking a deep breath, she began again. “The whole time I was in New Orleans with him, Jonathan never said one word about a girlfriend. Not when he asked me out to dinner, not when we strolled by the river holding hands, and certainly not when he kissed me.”

Rubbing her back, Larissa said, “I’m sorry that happened to you. I really thought Jonathan was a nice guy. I’m surprised by his behavior.”

“That’s just it—none of them are true-blue nice guys. Not Daddy, not Adam, and probably not even Solomon. They all cheat.”

Larissa held up her hand. “Now wait just a minute. I’m not going to let you call Dad a cheater either.
